Hero Hound Helps Get Osama

hero houndI'm sure many of you watched with satisfaction the news that Osama bin Laden had finally been found and justice served. What many of you probably didn't hear is that the team who went after him included a very special combat canine.

Strapped to one of the assault team members, as he repelled from one of the Black Hawk helicopters, was a specially trained explosive-sniffing dog. These types of trained dogs usually are very heavily armored and carry night vision cameras to help provide important footage and information on the raids. You can read more about this daring dog and his heroics here.

Update: I've found another longer article about the combat dogs that took part in the raid on Osama and who are working alongside soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. “The capability they bring to the fight cannot be replicated by man or machine,” said General Petraeus. I think this is just further evidence of the unique close relationship man has with dog and how we would not be where we are today without them to perform needed tasks and help protect us from threats. We send out a mighty and grateful “woof!” to our canines in camouflage and the soldiers they work with to keep us safe.
